Listen now | (Like Flodesk, Mailchimp etc. And if yes, what do I do with both?) On the podcast today we’re talking about one of our most frequently asked questions: “Do I need a mailing list provider like Flodesk or MailChimp if I have a Substack?” The answer is of course, it depends. While Substack does offer some of the functionality available in an external email service provider, it is limited and depending on your business, goals and audience, Substack alone may not be sufficient for you. Alternatively, you may find yourself with both a platform like Flodesk and Substack and feel like you’re holding the equivalent of two left shoes—either could work—but using both at once is not only unnecessary but potentially problematic.
The timing of was perfect - it’s like you were reading my mind. I was just wondering if I needed to start with both. Thank you! Grateful for your perspectives!
Keen to dive into this! Such an interesting topic. At the moment I’m keeping both. I do love the beautiful creative functionality of Flodesk, it makes those funnels and lead magnets so easy! Plus I use it for my client onboarding and session emails. So it’s definitely pulling its weight for me.
I’ve defined the split as my Flodesk newsletter is where I share the “head work” and in my Substack space is where I share the “heart work”. ✨
I haven’t quite got down the process of smoothly signing people up for both. Did Sara mention there is a work around for this? ☺️
This explanation of using Substack with an email service is fantastic, just what I was wondering about. You mentioned something about gmail? Do we need to send out our Substack from Gmail to do this with Zapier? Also ConvertKit has it's own recommendation program- would be cool to tap into that somehow.
Thanks Keeley, so helpful to be able to read this rather than to search in the podcast I listened to. I thought it is advised to have a domain email for one's business, not a gmail account? Thanks for your wisdom on this - Lora
Thank you for this episode - it is really appreciated. I'm dealing with this exact conundrum right now and feel I need the back up of my own email list on Mailerlite (because Susbtack took my publication down temporarily the other day for 24 hours due to SPAM/Phishing - my publication was incorrectly flagged, I was not doing anything wrong, but it worried me a little). I am going to try the Zapier integration and see if it can make it work - thank you 🙏
Oh no that's so scary! How awful. And yes that's actually a really good point. Probably at the very least making sure to back up a copy of our lists on a regular basis is worth getting into the habit of.
Thank you for this - it’s a question that I’ve been contemplating for myself. I may play with that google intervention in the meantime...
I have a related question that is built into this confusion for me. I have wondered about using flodesk to promote content on my website (blog/resources) as a way to build authority on website (is this still a thing??) and Substack content as more the community/ experiential side. I guess I’m still a little confused as to where to invest my energies...
Such a great question! It's such a nuanced answer, as a start though Sara has an amazing podcast episode on exactly this on Letters From A Hopeful Creative podcast with Jen Carrington right here: https://meandorla.substack.com/cp/141461445#details

Hi Michelle! This is great to hear, thank you! Love it when timing lines up like that too.

Oh I love the way you've defined that, how perfect and clear.
Yes! She did - and she's just posted it right here: https://meandorla.substack.com/p/how-to-automatically-add-your-substack

Hi Lora! I believe Sara's just posted an amazing explainer post on that right here: https://meandorla.substack.com/p/how-to-automatically-add-your-substack let me know if that helps?

Thanks for sharing this…. I’ll have a listen during the school holiday taxi-ing around 🤣
Great plan. Jen and Sara would make excellent taxi buddies I think. They'd probably pack *exceptional* snacks too.
Excellent. Really useful for strategic thinking.
So happy to hear that Caz, thank you.
Thank you so much for this conversation, it was really helpful, and encouraging.
So welcome Andō! That's lovely to hear, thank you!
Good question. Thanks for this!
Hey Andy! You're welcome!
Looking forward to listening 👌🏻
Hi Korynn! Enjoy!
